Quick summary
“Try HighLevel” is an affiliate link.
How much time and money are you losing to tools that don’t talk to each other?
Leads in one platform.
Appointments in another.
SMS, email, WhatsApp, funnels, payments, reviews and automations spread across even more tools.
At some point it gets expensive, messy and risky. Leads slip through the cracks, follow-ups go out late, and customers who were ready to buy move on.
HighLevel (also called GoHighLevel) was built to fix that.
It brings your CRM, landing pages, sales funnels, SMS, email, WhatsApp, calendars, automations, AI, payments, reviews and client management into one connected platform.
For agencies, consultants and service providers, it goes further.
Manage all your clients from one login. Copy a proven setup into a new account in minutes. Put your own brand on the platform, and even resell it as your own software.
One platform. One login. Full control over every lead.
In this GoHighLevel review, I break down every HighLevel feature in plain English: what it does, what it replaces, and who it’s actually for.
The simple way to think about HighLevel:
If you’re only looking for one small tool, HighLevel may be too much. But if you’re already paying for CRM, funnels, email, SMS, booking, automations and review management, HighLevel can replace a large part of your stack and put the whole customer journey in one place.

About HighLevel
HighLevel, also known as GoHighLevel, is a U.S. software company based in Dallas, Texas. It was founded in 2018 by Shaun Clark, Varun Vairavan and Robin Alex.
The platform was originally built for marketing agencies that needed one place to manage leads, clients, communication, automations, funnels, appointments, payments and reporting. Today HighLevel describes itself as an AI-powered business operating system, used by agencies, consultants, entrepreneurs and service businesses around the world.
| Founded | 2018 |
| Headquarters | Dallas, Texas, USA |
| Founders | Shaun Clark, Varun Vairavan and Robin Alex |
| Investors | PeakEquity Partners (led a $60M+ investment in 2021) and General Atlantic (minority growth investment in 2024) |
| Businesses on the platform | 2.2M+, according to HighLevel |
Who founded HighLevel, and who owns it?
HighLevel was founded by Shaun Clark, Varun Vairavan and Robin Alex, who still lead the company. It’s a privately held company. In November 2021, PeakEquity Partners led an investment of more than $60 million and joined the board alongside the co-founders (source). In 2024, General Atlantic made a minority growth investment (source).
When did HighLevel start?
HighLevel was founded in 2018 and launched publicly in 2019. It was built for marketing agencies first, then grew into a platform used by all kinds of service businesses.
Where is HighLevel based?
HighLevel is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Its team works across several countries, and the platform is used by businesses worldwide.
What HighLevel replaces
Most small businesses and agencies pay for a separate tool for each job below. HighLevel can cover many of these jobs in one account, though some advanced needs may still require a specialist tool.
| Job | Tools people often use for it | In HighLevel |
|---|---|---|
| CRM and pipelines | HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce | CRM, pipelines, reporting |
| Email marketing | Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign | Email campaigns and sequences |
| SMS and WhatsApp | Separate texting apps | Two-way SMS, WhatsApp, unified inbox |
| Booking | Calendly, Acuity | Calendars and automatic reminders |
| Funnels and landing pages | ClickFunnels, Leadpages | Website and funnel builder, forms |
| Courses and communities | Kajabi, Teachable, Skool | Courses, memberships, communities |
| Reviews | Podium, Birdeye | Reputation management and review requests |
| Social scheduling | Hootsuite, Buffer | Social planner |
| Automation | Zapier (for many tasks) | Workflows |
HighLevel doesn’t match every specialist tool feature for feature. Check that the features you rely on are covered before you switch.
Example: an agency paying separately for ClickFunnels, ActiveCampaign, Calendly, an SMS tool and a review platform can move all of that into one HighLevel account: one bill, one login, and one place where every lead’s history lives.
How HighLevel (GoHighLevel) works
HighLevel works by connecting every step of the customer journey in one account. Instead of passing a lead from one app to the next, the same contact record moves through each stage:
- Capture. A lead arrives through a form, funnel, website chat, call, Facebook or Instagram message, or WhatsApp. HighLevel creates a contact in the CRM automatically.
- Follow up. A workflow sends an instant SMS or email, assigns the lead to a pipeline stage, and can notify your team.
- Book. The lead picks a time on your calendar. Reminders go out automatically to reduce no-shows.
- Close and get paid. You send a proposal, invoice or payment link and move the deal to “won” in your pipeline.
- Keep and grow. After the job, HighLevel can request a review, add the customer to an email list, and track results in your reports.
Every message, call, booking and payment lands on the same contact record, so anyone on your team can see the full history in one place.
For agencies, the same system runs one level up. The agency account holds a separate sub-account for each client, and snapshots copy a ready-made setup (funnels, workflows, calendars) into each new client account.

Who HighLevel is for (and who should skip it)
A strong fit if you…
- Run a marketing agency or manage several clients.
- Run a service business that lives on leads, calls and appointments.
- Pay for 4–5 separate tools today (CRM, email, SMS, booking, funnels).
- Want follow-up to happen automatically.
Probably not for you if you…
- Only need a basic newsletter or a single landing page.
- Run an online store that mainly needs e-commerce features.
- Don’t have time to set up automations. There is a learning curve.
- Want the cheapest possible tool. You’re paying for an all-in-one platform.
Downsides and common complaints
No platform is perfect, and HighLevel has real trade-offs. It’s rated very highly overall on Trustpilot, but some critical reviews and complaints mention a few recurring issues:
- Learning curve. There’s a lot in the platform, and new users often find it overwhelming at first. Expect to spend real time on setup, or pay someone to do it.
- Not every module is best-in-class. HighLevel does many things well enough, but a dedicated tool (for example a specialist course platform or email tool) can be stronger in its one area.
- Usage fees can surprise beginners. SMS, calls, email and AI are billed on top of the monthly plan. Some reviewers complain about metered AI costs they didn’t expect.
- Support and billing complaints exist. Most reviews praise the support team, but some users report slow responses on complex issues.
- Agencies should protect client ownership. If you build client accounts, be clear in your contracts about who owns the domains, phone numbers and data if the client leaves.
Why is HighLevel so expensive?
At $97–$497/month, HighLevel costs more than a single-purpose tool. The price makes more sense when you compare it with the stack it replaces (CRM, email, SMS, booking, funnels, reviews), not with any one of those tools. The bill can also grow because SMS, calls, email and AI are billed by usage on top of the plan. If you only need one or two of these functions, a cheaper specialist tool may be the better choice.
Why is HighLevel so slow?
Some users report slow loading, especially in large accounts. HighLevel’s own help center says slow loading is usually browser-related, and recommends trying an incognito window, clearing your browser cache, disabling extensions, and testing another browser. If it’s still slow, send a support ticket with a screenshot of the browser console errors (source). For slow funnels and websites, HighLevel has a separate page-speed guide.
Why is HighLevel declining my card?
According to HighLevel’s billing help center, the most common causes are a billing address or postal code that doesn’t match your card issuer’s records, an incorrect CVV or expiry date, a bank blocking the charge (common with international or recurring payments), a card that isn’t enabled for online or recurring transactions, or a missing 3D Secure confirmation. HighLevel accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. You can retry a failed payment under Agency Settings → Billing, or contact billing@gohighlevel.com. If a payment stays unpaid, the account remains accessible for 21 days before it’s locked (source).
HighLevel vs HubSpot, ClickFunnels and other alternatives
| Alternative | Choose HighLevel if… | Choose the alternative if… |
|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | You want CRM, SMS, funnels, booking and reviews inside one connected platform with a predictable base plan. | You need a deep, best-in-class CRM with advanced sales reporting, and have the budget for it. |
| ClickFunnels | You need funnels plus a CRM, SMS, booking and client management. | Your main goal is selling products or offers through funnels, and you don’t need much CRM. |
| ActiveCampaign | Email is only one part of what you need. | Email marketing automation is the core of your business. |
| Kajabi | Courses are one part of a bigger sales and service business. | You mainly sell courses and memberships and want a creator-focused platform. |
| Vendasta | You want to build and brand your own client setups. | You want a marketplace of ready-made products and fulfillment services to resell. |

Real cost: what you may pay extra for
The monthly plan is only part of the bill. These are the extra costs to plan for, based on HighLevel’s pricing page:
| Item | How it’s billed |
|---|---|
| Phone numbers, SMS and calls | Usage-based |
| Email sending | Usage-based |
| AI (Conversation AI, Voice AI, content and review AI) | Usage-based, or AI Employee plans from $50/month per sub-account |
| WhatsApp integration | $10/month per sub-account, plus messaging usage |
| WordPress hosting | From $10/month per site |
| White-label mobile app | $497/month |
| Premium support | $500/month |

You don’t need most of these to get started. Just budget for SMS, email and phone usage from day one.

How to use HighLevel: a simple first-week plan
The fastest way to learn HighLevel is to build one working process end to end, then expand. A realistic first week looks like this:
- Set up your account. Add your business details, time zone and team members. Agencies create a sub-account for their first client, or for their own business.
- Connect your channels. Add a phone number for SMS and calls, connect your email sending domain, and link your Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp if you use them.
- Import your contacts. Upload a CSV of existing leads and customers so everything starts in one CRM.
- Build one pipeline. Create stages that match how you actually sell, for example: New lead → Contacted → Booked → Won.
- Create one lead form and one calendar. Put the form on your site or a simple landing page, and connect the calendar for bookings.
- Build one workflow. For example: form submitted → instant SMS → reminder email the next day → move to “Contacted”.
- Test it yourself, then go live. Submit the form as a test lead, check every message and booking, and fix anything before real leads come in.
Tips for a smoother start
- Give yourself time to learn it. Reviewers on G2 and Trustpilot mention a real learning curve. Plan for a few weeks before you feel at home, longer if you want to use every module.
- Use snapshots if you’re an agency. A snapshot copies a full setup into a new account, so each new client takes minutes instead of days.
- Use the trial to test your real process. HighLevel lists a 14-day trial on its pricing page. Build the one workflow that matters most to you and see if it works.
- Watch usage costs in the first month. Check your SMS, call and AI usage after a few weeks so the bill doesn’t surprise you.
FAQ
- What is GoHighLevel? GoHighLevel, officially called HighLevel, is an all-in-one sales and marketing platform for agencies and service businesses. It combines a CRM, sales pipelines, SMS and email marketing, calendars, funnels and websites, payments, reviews and automation in one account. It was founded in 2018 and is based in Dallas, Texas.
- How does GoHighLevel work? Every lead becomes a contact in one CRM. From there, workflows follow up automatically by SMS or email, the lead books on your calendar, and you close the deal with a proposal, invoice or payment link. All messages, calls, bookings and payments stay on the same contact record. Agencies run a separate sub-account for each client.
- How do I start using GoHighLevel? Start small: set up your account, connect a phone number and email domain, import your contacts, build one pipeline, add one form and calendar, and create one follow-up workflow. Test it with a fake lead, then go live and add more features over time.
- Is HighLevel only for marketing agencies? No. Agencies get the most out of the white-label and sub-account tools, but service businesses like clinics, coaches and contractors use it as their CRM and follow-up system.
- How much does HighLevel cost? Plans start at $97/month (Starter), then $297/month (Unlimited) and $497/month (Agency Pro). Usage such as SMS, calls, email and AI is billed separately.
- Can I cancel HighLevel anytime? HighLevel says there’s no obligation and you can cancel at any time. Check the current terms at signup, and remember that usage charges already incurred are still billed.
